Nita Tin’s story is one absolutely worth exploring. It captures the mystery and wonder of human life. Nita is a beautiful soul, and it is reflected in her words. You can almost imagine stepping back in time and seeing the film of her life starting as a little girl in what was then Rangoon. There is a richness and sweetness to the writing, which makes it an easy and enjoyable read. There are many anecdotes in the book, both heartwarming and heartbreaking alike. I particularly enjoyed learning about Nita’s childhood, which was so foreign and exotic. It was fascinating and educational to learn of a world and time I knew nothing about, and how this one story would capture the resilience of a family who went through circumstances that most Americans, fortunately, have never experienced.

This book has everything for an intellectually curious reader – history, sadness, the quest for meaning and purpose, whether in love or in heartbreak, family, laughter and levity, faith, inspiration and most importantly, in my opinion, the testimony to God’s grace and what one family can accomplish together with grit, hope, and human spirit. “Heartbeat of a Survivor” has a genuine heartbeat; one that can be felt on every page."

If you haven’t read this book, I would highly recommend it. Dr. Tin had a great impact on my life with his incredible surgical skills and caring spirit. He performed several eye surgeries on me to correct a degenerative disease that prevented blindness. The story of how he and his family came to the United States as refugees and the hardships they had to overcome is incredible. Thank you, Nita, for sharing your story.

Amazing Story of Triumph over Tragedy! This is an incredible book. It’s a story with so many facets to it. Different cultures, religions, and countries. It’s a story of a brutal military regime and how a person’s faith and trust in God conquers all. It’s also a wonderful love story between 2 people devoted to each other, and through tremendous trials, they triumph against the odds. If you want a book to take on holiday or simply discover and read about the strength of the human spirit, then this book is for you. Nita writes beautifully, and the chapters are not long, so it is ideal for bedtime reading!

Reading it right now…Day 2 in hospital - I read the book until 1:40 am, and I couldn’t put it down. The nurses wanted to know why I hadn’t gone to sleep. It was helpful having an insight into our happy entwined lives, but there was so much that I didn’t know! So much hardship and sorrow after we left for Australia, and my heart felt so sad that we weren’t aware of what you all went through. To my amazement, I picked up “Heartbeat of A Survivor” on Saturday and could not put it down. I finished it Sunday. Your story mesmerized me from beginning to end. I especially loved your love story with Pe. Melted my heart! It was so sweet and heartwarming. The amazing part of your story was how you went from living such a rich and privileged life to living a life that I could not begin to imagine. I did not grow up privileged and I don’t know if I could have done as well as you did. Leaving the tyrannical government in Burma and your family is another unbelievable and difficult thing to imagine. God brought you through it, but it sounds like he gave you one amazing husband.
